Description

This is a nice, original 493rd Fighter Squadron Patch. Motto is "Mors Inimicis," or "Death to Enemy." Nicknamed  "Grim Reapers." The squadron operated P-47 Thunderbolts and participated in supporting the Normandy Landing with ground attacks on bridges. and gun positions, attacking rail lines and trains, and providing visual reconnaissance reports. Moved to France in mid-June 1944, supporting ground operations of Allied forces moving east across northern France throughout the war. The 493rd Fighter Squadron still operates to this day, and is considered as the top fighter squadron in the United States Air Force.
This patch is unusual in that it is bordered in white and is believed to be an early iteration of the insignia. Was purchased with other WWII items from 1944, when the unit was formed. We assume that it is of the WWII era. We can not find another example of this patch.
Measures 6.75" x 6"
There is some mild surface discoloration to material. The front or face material is of a felt material.
