Description
USS Tirante Submarine patch and belt buckle. Nice original patch that does not glow under black light. Patch is used but in nice clean condition and is approximately 4-3/4 inches wide by 5-1/8 inches high. Silver belt buckle is marked VULCAN BOBO JAPAN. Obtained from a 28 year submarine veteran that crewed on the Tirante.USS Tirante, SS-420, a
Tench-class submarine
, was the second ship of the
United States Navy
to be named for the
tirante
, a silvery, elongated "cutlass fish" found in waters off
Cuba
. Her keel was laid down on 28 April 1944 by the
Portsmouth Navy Yard
of
Kittery, Maine
. She was
launched
on 9 August 1944. Tirante complete three successful war time patrols before being decommissioned on July 6, 1946. On April 11, 1974, Tirante was sold to Union Minerals and Alloys of New York and scrapped.
