    Description

    This sale is in aid of my local Hospice Thrift Store, where I volunteer working on electronics. I sell items here for the store that don't readily sell in house, alongside my normal vintage audio business.
    This listing is for a TEAC C-3 stereo cassette deck. It's a 3 head machine, described as a pro machine by TEAC and both externally and internally it has a lot in common with the pro TASCAM 100 series cassette decks, in this case the TASCAM 122. It is very solidly built, with nicely geared independent input level controls and the same quality logic controlled transport buttons. It has rack mount ears and handles, but has never been rack-mounted.
    After changing the main belt and the reel drive belt and cleaning the tape path, performance was excellent on pre-recorded tapes and recording from CDs.
    This deck also has a front panel facility to inject a calibration signal, and I used that to do a check calibration of the total frequency response - recording and playback of test tones. Without any adjustment it was well within spec at 18 kHz compared to a 1kHz reference, using Maxell XLII tape, and it sounds like that - excellent.
    It's worth noting that in their continual spec changes, TEAC introduced an C-3X model. The differences are that the X model has a separate reel motor and will also run at 3 3/4 ips, twice the normal cassette speed. That's used in the pro world, but honestly a great way of using twice as much tape as you need for home recording, with minimal quality improvement and no use at all for playing pre-recording tapes.
    The C-3 is highly recommended at a useful saving compared to a C-3X and this is a particularly good example of the C-3.
