Handsom near mint cosmetically silver face C.1978 Sony TC-R96K microprocessor-controlled logic transport with Servo controlled Motors, Auto-reverse deck. Made in Japan and built in the great tradition of the early Sony decks. Unit has an interesting design were by you can disengage the front control panel and by means of an accessory cable (not included) turn the removed front panel into a wired remote. Supposedly these decks retailed for almost 0 back in 1978 which would make them over ,000 in today's economy. So it wasn't a cheap date. This thing is built like a tank and weighs 20 lb! Original unmolested condition. I am listing this for parts not working due to the fact that the deck needs the standard age related restoration that all of these decks need, so this is nothing unusual. I believe that any of the intermittent functioning and non-functioning problems would be solved with recapping at least the power supply. The transport and auto reverse functions start to work if you wait about 10 min after you turn it on for the caps to charge. After that, the auto stop when in rewind mode does not always stop as it should when it is to the end of a side on fast rewind (I believe that this is due to a dried out idler wheel that needs to be replaced). Auto reverse functions when tape comes to an end on a side just fine. Has all original belts and idler wheel, so I'm sure that they need to be replaced. After all it's 44 years old. All the lights work and all the buttons work, tape counter too. The overall condition cosmetically is near mint with only a few light surface scratches (examine the photos). So the good news is once you do a proper restoration on this electronically and mechanically you will have a real showpiece as it is not beat aesthetically. Unit will be double boxed for shipment.
