    Description

    Presented is a medal commemorating the 1950 dedication of the ANDREW WILLGOOS TURBINE LABORATORY at the P&WA engine facility in East Hartford, Conn. This facility, once the largest privately-owned gas turbine laboratory in the world, was built to test experimental engines and components in simulated flight conditions.
    In these test cells, it was possible to simulate altitudes ranging from sea level to more than 70,000 feet and velocities up to three times the speed of sound.
    This facility operated five plus decades but became obsolete and was demolished in 2012.

    medal depicts the testing facility buildings along the Connecticut River.
    Around the periphery are the words ANDREW WILLGOOS LABORATORY and at the bottom DEDICAT1ON 1950, The reverse, around the periphery, repeats the facilities name noted above and in the center, notes a short biography of Andrew Willgoos’ engineering contributions in the development of P&W radial engines.
