  • Year: 1916 or earlier
  • Condition: This is a very rare item from the 1910 era, removed from a 1916 American LaFrance pumper many years ago. It is made of iron and shows a light rust scale which appears to be only on the surface. This piece should clcean up nicely and comes with a more modern type of mounting bracket which fits the piece perfectly for a display or for mounting upon a piece of apparatus.

    Description

This is an interesting piece of history called a 2 1/2-inch hose jacket to temporarily stop major leaks in fire hose.  Made as the Neely Stopleak appliance and originally mounted upon a 1916 American LaFrance pumper.  Every part of this piece is original, including the rivets holding the rubber liner, which is in excellent condition, as well.  The latches are solid original with no repairs but they are tight and in need of cleaning or lubrication or both.  The hinges are tight but do open and close but a good cleaning and lube here would also be a good idea.  It has surface rust as shown but no heavy build-up of rust.  Much of the original paint remains and has some light spattering of what appears to be aluminum paint from some other project.  A wire wheel would clean this up to original condition.  The mount included with this auction is from a much more modern time period but it fits the piece very nicely, as shown, and is included in this sale.
