III Marine Air Wing White Back Patch WWII Original Hawaii Midway Pacific

The Patch:
This Auction is for 1 WWII Vintage III Marine Air Wing patch with a white back.  The eagle on this variation has a black eye.
This patch is in good condition.  It has a very nice white backing.  This patch does not glow under the UV light and is guaranteed to be authentic.
The History:  The 3
rd
Marine Air Wing was activated on November 10
th
, 1942 at the Marine Corps Air Station,
Cherry Point
,
NC
with the mission of training and organizing squadrons for overseas duty.  The wing managed to train four air groups in four months, despite supply and equipment shortages.  They also pioneered the use of the medium dive bomber.  It also had the first night fighter squadron (VMF(N)-531) ready for combat in July of 1943.  The unit was made up of 15, 470 men and 465 aircraft by March of 1944. The 3
rd
MAW activated 10 groups, 37 tactical squadrons and 1 air warning squadron.  The 3
rd
was relieved in April of 1944 and was sent to
Hawaii
.  After its arrival, the 3
rd
was responsible for more advanced training of units being assigned to AirFMFPac.  The Wing was also assigned two squadrons based on
Midway
Island
and helped with the Air defense of the
Hawaiian Islands
.  It remained at
Ewa
,
Hawaii
until it was deactivated on December 31, 1945.
