In 1876 he exhibited a portrait of a woman for the first time. In 1880 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. As a result he went on extensive study trips, lived in Munich from 1884 to 1888, studied in Paris with Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and settled in Vienna in 1892.
