Walter Clemens Schmidt was born on 25
July born in 1890 in Frankfurt / Main , the eldest of five children of the Privy Council Medical Dr. Julius Schmidt and his wife Agathe .

After attending the Model School he began in 1907 a lesson in stained glass Professor Alexander Linnemann , Frankfurt, which he completed in 1911.
At the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich, he became a master student of Professor Julius Diez , with whom he became close friends until his death .
From 1913 until the outbreak of war in 1914, he attended the Royal Academy of Arts Dusseldorf .
From October 1914 until the end of the first
World war he engaged in military service .
After returning from the war, he still attended the winter semester 1918 at the School of Applied Arts in Munich and settled in 1919 , first as a freelance artist in his hometown of Frankfurt / Main down .
After his marriage to the Frankfurt resident Louise Quick , he joined in 1922 in the Graphic Arts Institute F. Guhl & Co , Frankfurt, and where he worked as a commercial artist .
From 1940 - 1945 he took over as captain on 2
World War partly in France and Czechoslovakia.
1945 his house in Vogtstraße was confiscated on Holzhausenpark in Frankfurt / Main by the American occupation .
Thus, all blocks of wood and his most important works were lost.
Walter Clemens Schmidt took his professional career in 1945 in the company Guhl back on and worked there until he went into retirement.
He died on 15
October 1979 at the age of 89 years in Frankfurt / Main.In the twenties and thirties of the 20th
Century, he was at the height of his graphic work.
He preferred particularly allegorical and religious subjects .
Were known sheets ( woodcuts ) as Savonarola , The Temptation of Saint Anthony , the image sequence St. John the Baptist , Pentecost, Madonna " Es ist ein Ros ' .

In his artistic style he felt the best tradition of graphic art of the German Renaissance related .
With its downright explosive expressiveness he aroused attention and admiration.
Occasionally the artist adorned his best leaves with delicate strokes of color .
He preferred dark red, yellow and gold .
Schmidt also designed many bookplates , often orders known citizens of Frankfurt .
They were honored at the beginning of the twenties by Rudolf Krauss in the relevant literature .
While he was at first mainly created woodcuts , he devoted himself after 1945 rather of oil painting .
He has left well over a hundred paintings , including some stained glass windows.
Its stained glass windows in some churches and chapels were destroyed during the war , individual pieces are preserved in private ownership.
His designs are mostly still present.
Known to a wider public should be his 1930 book created facilities of Song Book The minstrel with the distinctive title vignette and illustrations of the various headings , which was taken up in the seventies unchanged across all conditions.
Walter Clemens Schmidt shunned public exhibitions .
His wife (d. 1991) refused to exhibit his paintings .
His woodcuts had only very short runs .
It so happens that Walter Clemens Schmidt remained largely unknown and his works are found predominantly in the family or circle of friends.
